A little rain didn't stop 40,000 pounds of
potatoes from being dropped off in the parking lot at First United Methodist
Church of Warner Robins.
Representatives from 20 organizations gathered on Saturday morning to pick up and
distribute 800 50-lb bags of potatoes through South Georgia. The event was
coordinated by Eddie Davidson, a member of FUMC WR, and Marian Kelly, food drop
coordinator to the Society of St. Andrew (SOSA). SOSA is a non-profit
organization that salvages fresh produce and redistributes it to feed the
hungry.
These potatoes came from Durham, NC.
They were gleaned from fields after the crop had been harvested.
What
is gleaning?
Gleaning is the process of
gathering grain or produce left in a field by reapers or on a vine or tree by
pickers. Law required that the corners of the fields not be harvested and
that any grain that was dropped be left. This portion of the harvest was
left to be gathered for food by the poor and travelers.
